How to tell the difference
The difference between an elevator and a lift may be hard to spot, but it all comes down to how they’re operated.
An elevator is operated with automatic one-touch controls. You simply push the floor selection button and enjoy the ride.
A lift, however, requires constant pressure operation. This means maintaining pressure on the floor selection and call buttons to start moving. This typically makes lifts better suited for shorter travel distances.
Traditionally, the assumption has been that lifts are exclusively open air products built for function, while elevators are closed units with a full car and shaft. In today’s industry, this isn’t necessarily the case, and many lifts are now offered as enclosed cars with shafts with the look and feel of a traditional elevator.
