Ancient Pulley Systems
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. But did you know that the earliest iterations of elevators were invented by them as well? Step back in time to around 236 B.C., when the Romans used pulley systems to move boulders, slabs, and other large materials during construction. This was done by attaching ropes to a large wheel that people or animals pulled manually. Similar iterations of this lift were innovated quickly in other settings, such as King Louis XV’s infamous “flying chair” in the Palace of Versailles.
While not quite as stunning as one of our Stratus elevators, this antiquity-aged invention laid the groundwork for the modern commercial elevators we see today.
Hydraulic Elevators
During the height of the Industrial Revolution, workers needed a way to consistently move bulk materials within buildings. In response to this demand, several influential inventors developed the hydraulic elevator. The idea was simple: instead of using ropes and mechanical energy, pressurized water could lift the cab. Though hydraulic elevators aren’t as common in North American buildings these days, their invention helped advance the modern elevator industry.
The First Electric Safety Lift
During the 1854 World’s Fair, Elisha Graves Otis amazed hundreds of people with the invention of the world’s first safety lift. By adding a spring-loaded falling-prevention mechanism, passengers could use it without fear of the rope snapping. Several years later, the world’s first commercial elevator was installed in 1857 in New York.
The 20th Century Revolution
The early 1900s brought about transformative changes for commercial elevator technology. Electric motors replaced steam-powered systems, making elevators faster and more reliable. Push-button controls revolutionized the user experience, allowing passengers to select their destination floor with ease. Buildings began reaching unprecedented heights, with structures like the Empire State Building showcasing how elevators could enable vertical cities. By the 1950s, automatic doors became standard, improving safety and convenience for users across North America.
Modern Safety and Technology
Today’s commercial elevators bear little resemblance to their ancient rope-and-pulley ancestors. Advanced computerized systems monitor everything from load capacity to travel speed, ensuring smooth operation. Emergency communication systems provide a direct connection to help if needed. Modern elevators also feature energy-efficient designs, with regenerative drives that can actually return power to the building’s electrical grid during descent. These innovations make today’s elevators safer, more reliable, and more environmentally friendly than ever before.
