All elevators need pits, and that’s…. well… the pits… Even the RAM elevator needs a shallow pit… However, ours are only 2-3 inches rather than the 4-5 feet necessary for other home elevators. Installing a typical-size pit can lead to more problems than solutions because when an elevator pit is being installed in an existing home, concrete has to be broken in the basement.
Breaking concrete can open a whole can of worms you are unprepared for, like hitting a gas, water or electric line. Suddenly, your home elevator investment has become the source of major repairs significantly exceeding your budgeted costs and time. Elevator pits are not a DIY project that can be done on the weekend; it is serious construction that must be done by a professional.
Pros of a Pitless Design
RAM Elevator + Lift’s proprietary electric drive system has done away with needing both an elevator pit and a machine room for the elevator. Traditional hydraulic elevators require a machine room above the elevator to store the motor, shaft, and additional equipment. All residential RAM elevators and lifts are non-hydraulic, machine room-less and pitless.
Thanks to the innovative engineering team, RAM has circumvented the need to break concrete altogether. Why break ground and possibly damage a line when you could build a pit for the elevator to sit in? Even with the construction of brand-new houses, it’s far more convenient to build up a 3-inch pit that acts as a platform for the elevator.
For every inch of rise, the ramp must be a corresponding length of feet. If there is a 3-inch rise, that pit will require a ramp that is 3 feet long. This creates a steady rise for wheelchair users to access the elevator easily.
Safety is Key
Safety is the number one factor when designing and manufacturing any elevating device. Ensuring an elevator meets the province’s code-compliant specifications is extremely important. At RAM, we are uncompromising in our attention to detail and maintaining our superior quality level because our users’ safety is paramount.
Safety is “the why” behind our products. Accessibility stems from the lack of safe options for people with disabilities and mobility challenges. It is the core of RAM; from initial designs to installation and servicing, we’ve thought every aspect through.
No Hidden Costs
When you work with RAM to build your dream home elevator, you can rest assured that you are getting the very best deal on the market. At RAM, we pride ourselves on taking the manufacturing into our own hands. Instead of the exorbitant fees that come with off-shore manufacturing, we handle most of the manufacturing in-house.
This has allowed us to fine-tune our processes and offer our customers superior quality at an affordable price. Because at RAM, we firmly believe that accessibility is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Thanks to our highly streamlined systems, clients rarely have to wait more than 6-8 weeks from consultation to construction of their elevator.
A pitless design prevents the possibility of hidden costs arising from the unknown damages that can be caused when breaking concrete. The more problems arise, the longer it takes and the more expensive it becomes. We believe in getting it right the first time, so our users can make the most of their elevators immediately.
