What You Need To Know Before Installing a Commercial Lift

by | Oct 14, 2025 | Elevators, Lifts

Commercial lifts are a beacon of accessibility in public spaces and signify a building’s commitment to inclusivity. They’ve become increasingly common in spaces where full-size elevators can’t be installed, but accessibility is still essential. Vertical Platform Lifts (VPL) are among the most popular commercial lifts in North America, and are ideal for transporting guests over smaller distances. If you’re a building owner looking to invest in a VPL for your commercial space, we’re here to assist.

At RAM Elevators + Lifts, it’s our vision to make 10,000 buildings more accessible by 2029. Join us as we explore key considerations every building owner should know before installing a commercial lift.

#1:  Understand Your Building’s Accessibility Needs

Before getting started on selecting a commercial lift for your building, it’s essential to understand what purpose it will serve. While its main function will be to bring guests with limited mobility between levels, there are building-specific considerations to keep in mind. Between foot traffic levels to weather conditions, a commercial lift should be chosen with these requirements in mind.

Here are several questions to keep in mind for your commercial lift:

  • How many users are expected to frequent the area?
  • What are peak usage times for the commercial lift?
  • Is there a dedicated power supply available nearby?
  • Will it be installed indoors or outdoors?
  • Is the area protected from vandalism and weather conditions?

#2: Know Your Compliance Requirements

Any lift installed in a commercial space must be compliant with several regulations, including federal and local regulations. In addition, there may also be building-specific regulations. For example, some building codes require additional backup systems in place or additional structural reinforcements for commercial lifts.

At RAM, we’re committed to establishing ourselves as commercial lift code experts. Our Flex Lift is compliant with industry standards, including ASME A18.1, CSA B613 and CSA B355. These standards outline nearly every aspect of a passable commercial lift, including load capacity, maintenance, speed limits, and placement.

#3: Consider Space & Structural Requirements

While many spaces can benefit from a commercial lift, not every space can house one. A suitable installation location will need to have space and structural requirements in order to ensure the lift can be installed and used safely.

Your installer will work closely with you to choose an ideal place for the commercial lift. They’ll ensure the space will have acceptable overhead clearance, platform space, electrical access, and more. For example, the installation location must have ample space for fully accessible entry and exit points, with a clear path that won’t be blocked off. At RAM, the Flex Lift comes in 70 different configurations with varied access points. This flexibility allows us to provide a commercial lift solution that fits seamlessly into nearly any building.

#4: Consider User Experience

A commercial lift is an extension of your building. In many cases, it will be your guests’ first point of access to your building. As such, it’s essential to consider your guest’s user experience while on the lift itself. A smooth, bump-free riding experience will give your guests peace of mind that their comfort is your top priority.

A commercial lift will see plenty of usage, especially in high-traffic areas. In response, our commercial VPL utilizes a Zero-Load Start Design. By letting the motor quietly reach full speed and power capacity, you can better avoid unexpected breakdowns and wear-and-tear.
