Home Platform Lift vs. Stair Lift: Which Is Better for Your Home?

by | Oct 14, 2025 | Lifts

If you’re in the market for a home accessibility solution, you may have come across both home platform lifts and stair lifts. Both of these solutions allow users greater access to their homes and provide dignified accessibility day in and day out.

But what’s the difference between home platform lifts and stair lifts, and which is right for you? In this short article, we’ll explore all about the features, differences, and best-fit scenarios of these two options—and help you make an informed decision. Follow along with us here at RAM Elevators + Lifts, as we delve into the details below.

What Is a Home Platform Lift?

A home platform lift, such as a vertical platform lift (VPL), is a partially or fully enclosed device designed to bring users between levels in the home. They’re often installed beside stairs, but can also be placed wherever there’s a landing. Home platform lifts can be installed both indoors and outdoors, and can also be customized to fit different home aesthetics.

What Is a Stair Lift?

A stair lift, on the other hand, is a powered chair that lifts users from one side of a staircase to the other. These lifts are installed alongside stairs on their treads, often on the wall side. Like home platform lifts, stair lifts can be installed both indoors and outdoors.

Matching the Lift to the User

While both home platform lifts and stairlifts are similar in purpose, they are suited for different users. Home platform lifts are ideal for those with wheelchairs or other mobility aids, thanks to their wide platform design. Stair lifts, on the other hand, require the user to transfer themselves into the seat. As such, these devices are best suited to those with greater mobility.

Which One Fits Your Home?

In order for a home platform lift to be installed, your home will need to have sufficient open space available. Your installer will help you decide on the best place in your home for your VPL, and will also assist in minor home alterations to ensure the best possible fit. While it differs from case to case, this can include opening up the floor and bracing walls.

Stair lifts can also be installed alongside stairs, making them a less invasive option than VPLs. The trade-off, however, is that these devices are more limited in installation location. Additionally, stair lifts are typically more visible, which is something to keep in mind when considering overall home aesthetics.

Installation Time

Stair lifts can often be installed within one day, as they require minimal modifications. Home platform lifts, on the other hand, vary in installation time depending on your home’s layout. A RAM Flex-Lift can be installed in as little as a few hours, depending on the amount of structural changes needed.

Our Verdict: Which One Should You Choose?

How you choose to modify your home is solely up to you. Both home platform lifts and stair lifts offer greater home accessibility and are beneficial options for many homeowners. A Stair lift may be better for those with extremely limited home space who don’t require mobility aid access.

That said, a home platform lift offers greater long-term flexibility. VPLs support aging-in-place and are ideal for a wide range of users, from those with wheelchairs to walkers.
