What Goes Into the Cost of a Home Elevator?

by | Apr 27, 2026 | Elevators

Investing in a home elevator involves far more than simply choosing the elevator model itself. These home mobility solutions also involve additional factors, including site preparation, testing, and home modifications, that contribute to the full elevator installation cost.

In this short blog, let’s break down what goes into the overall elevator installation cost, why each step matters, and how it ensures reliable operation for years to come. Read on with us at RAM Elevators + Lifts. For nearly 40 years, we’ve been one of North America’s industry-leading manufacturers of reliable elevators and lifts.

#1: The Elevator Itself

As expected, the highest portion of most elevator installation costs is the elevator itself. This is also the most variable component, as elevator costs can vary significantly depending on type, construction, and model. Some options feature compact yet efficient builds, while others utilize panoramic all-glass designs. There are also design considerations for the cab itself, including panels, trims, and doors.

There is no shortage of options on the market, so take the time to weigh out your options carefully. It’s best to partner with a trusted elevator manufacturer with a long-standing track record to help you find the best fit for your home and budget.

#2: Pit Excavation

Pit excavation is often one of the most overlooked contributors associated with home elevator installation costs. In some elevators, it’s a requirement. These home models need a pit to be installed underneath the shaft for clearance and sometimes to house components, such as pistons (in hydraulic elevators only).

That said, not all elevators require a pit. At RAM, all of our home elevators are available in two options: pitless or a small 3” pit. Both options help reduce installation complexity during pre-installation and minimize overall elevator installation cost.

#3: The Home’s Structural Modifications

There’s no way around it: a home elevator can sometimes be a sizeable home addition. Unlike a new washing machine or refrigerator, it also requires greater modifications than simply finding a place for it and plugging it in. It’s a fully customized job, which takes into account the home’s existing architecture to find the right place for it. In nearly all cases, a new retrofit installation requires some sort of modification. This portion of the elevator installation cost may include cutting through floors, reinforcing walls, and any necessary electrical rewiring.

This also includes the cost of a machine room (if needed). The machine room is a space that houses essential elevator components, including the controller and counterweights. That said, many modern elevators no longer require a separate elevator room, as they house these components within the shaft itself.

#5: Labour & Testing

Just like any home appliance, a home elevator must be installed through a licensed dealer. Once you’re connected to the dealer, they’ll send a technician to your home to assess placement, determine any structural needs, and come up with an installation plan before giving you a quote. Then, on installation day, they’ll prepare the site, install the elevator, ensure power and backup systems are in place, and conduct testing.

Your technician is there to utilize their specialized knowledge to ensure that your elevator is installed properly, safely, and in compliance with all relevant codes. If you have any questions at all, they’re there to help ensure that you’re comfortable with using and maintaining your elevator.
